Tongue In Cheek Environmentalists Protest River Neglect

Northern Plains Resource Council, protectors of the Tongue River in Southeastern Montana, want to rename the river to “East Fork of the Flathead”. The name is a political statement meant to draw the attention of the Governor and other statewide officials to the fact that the Tongue River does not receive the same protection from pending coal, oil, and methane developments as the North Fork of the Flathead in

Western Montana.

The Mayor of Miles City, Joe Whalen, announced in April that he is in support of this, and he has set forth a proclamation that the portion of the Tongue River alongside Miles City within his jurisdiction be renamed. Now, only the United States Geological Survey has the authority to change river names, but hopefully the press generated by the renaming debate will make the public and the state more aware of the environmental issue at hand before all the deadly pollution dooms the Tongue River into being called The River Styx!
