A stretch of Long Beach shoreline has been renamed after community
activist Justin Rudd’s bulldog, Rosie. The Long Beach Dog Zone, a popular place for pet owners to walk, is now Rosie’s Dog Beach in honor of a very special dog who has 1,195 fans on Facebook, has been on Animal Planet and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Rosie passed away in January at the ripe old age of 12. Before the beach was created more than 9 years ago, there was no place where dogs were allowed to play off leash. After 20 months of off-leash special events hosted by Rosie and owner Rudd (such as a “Bulldog Beauty Contest”), and another 15 month pilot program, the off-leash beach area was established in Oct. 2004. It is used by hundreds of dogs and owners every day, and remains the only off-leash beach in Los Angeles County. Before she died, the sight of Rudd pulling Rosie around in her little red wagon was a familiar sight for locals!
