of the Red Lodge School District have voted to rename their controversial Redskins mascot. Cheers erupted at the meeting on Tuesday night when the final decision was made. The term Redskin is considered to be derogatory and offensive towards Native Americans. The name change was prompted by a letter to the school board from the Northern Cheyenne Tribal Council asking them to change the mascot. The mascot and the name, which have been around for 60 years, will be changed although the school board does not yet have an alternative name selected. The community and the students will work together to come up with a new name.
