Ottawa’s Nelson Mandela Bridge Debate Continues

Pretoria Bridge, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, is a hot topic of discussion as members of parliament argue over whether to rename it after Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela. Paul Dewar, a member of the NDP, believes that the bridge across the Rideau Canal that links Old Ottawa East with the Glebe and Centretown should be called Nelson Mandela Bridge and that Mandela deserves more recognition in Canada’s capital. “I guess he

has a lot of recognition in our history but no recognition in our city formally,” Dewar said. However, Mandela has already had the honors of addressing Canada’s Parliament, received honorary Canadian citizenship, and was made a Companion of the Order of Canada. Pretoria Bridge was named after the South African capital, and commemorates the Canadian soldiers who fought in the Boer War. Those opposed to the renaming fear the erasing of this historical war tribute. Ultimately, the name will be decided by City Hall.
