People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) has written to the pop band Pet Shop Boys, requesting that they rename themselves the Rescue Shelter Boys. PETA has requested the name change because of the cruelty towards animals that it claims takes place in pet stores, and asks the band to change their name to “encourage your millions of fans to consider giving a home to an abandoned or unwanted animal from
an animal shelter”. The electronic pop duo of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have turned down the rename request, but have posted PETAs concerns on their website and noted that the issues are “worth thinking about.” The organization is pleased the the band has drawn attention to their cause. The Pet Shop Boys have sold over 100 million records worldwide, and are listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the most successful duo in UK music history.
