People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has sent a letter to the mayor of Turkey, Texas asking for the town to be renamed “Tofurky” for one day. The town gets its name from the large amount of wild turkeys in the area. The request is part of a Thanksgiving campaign by the animal rights group. In the letter, PETA argues that most turkeys suffer in terrible slaughterhouse conditions before they are killed and that eating meat can cause serious health problems. On the other hand, “Tofurky” is a soy-based meat alternative that still has that traditional Thanksgiving taste without all
of the cruelty. PETA has also promised to feed the entire town a full-course vegan Thanksgiving feast if the mayor decides to go through with the name change, but so far the major has
responded with a firm “no”.
