Queens Assemblymember David Weprin will be renaming 260th Street between 80th and 81st
Avenues in Floral Park to “Ghanwatti Boodram Way,” as a memorial to a Guyanese nurse who was tragically killed by a gas explosion in her home on the street in April 2009. Ghanwatti is survived by her husband Dindial Boodram, and three young boys, who were at work and at school the day when a Con Edison gas line outside her street exploded, destroying her house and a neighbor’s home. The family lost everything. Ghanwatti emigrated to Woodside when she was 19 and studied nursing at LaGuardia Community College. She worked as a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital in Manhattan and was a strong member of the Guyanese community. Hundreds of friends and family from her native land came to Queens for her funeral. The explosion set off an outcry from
the community and elected officials for Con Edison to improve procedures in order to prevent a similar tragedy like this from happening again.
