Actor Salman Khan has suggested recently that Mumbai’s Hindi film industry should be renamed. He finds the current name “Bollywood” ridiculous and instead wants to refer to the industry as HiFi (which stands for Hindi Film industry).
The word Bollywood originated back when the city of Mumbai was called Bombay, and was a common term often used incorrectly to refer to the while of Indian cinema.
Salman argues that the name is outdated and perpetuates stereotypes that do not apply to the Indian film industry.
Salman’s idea has been supported by colleague Riteish Deshmukh, who tweeted his enthusiastic response.
