The vote was made unanimously to rename The Adams Avenue Sports Complex in El Centro, California after Martin Luther King Jr. The proposal was originally to rename Eighth Street after King, but the committee decided that the new Dr. Martin Luther King Pavilion was a much greater tribute.
The sports complex will encompass a four block radius, and include an indoor sports pavilion, aquatic center, recreation center, skate park and a youth center.
Mayor Cheryl Viegas-Walker was in support of the renaming, stating that she thought it captured the greatness of what King achieved. The final vote was met with applause on Wednesday evening.
