A new trend in Taiwan is seeing 120,000 Taiwanese people every year renaming themselves in order to improve their luck. In 2009, a total of 116, 121 people in Taiwan applied for a name change with official local registration offices. It is believed that changing one’s name can alter one’s fate, and having the right name can attract good luck.
It is legal in Taiwanese law for a person to change their name up to twice within a lifetime. Most only change their first name and leave their family name the same.
Many fortune tellers in Taiwan offer a service to people that helps them determine what the luckiest name will be. They charge top prices for this service, around 3,000-8,000 Taiwan dollars (100-260 US dollars).
