When the Sears Tower was built in 1973 it was the tallest building in the world. It
still holds the rank of fifth tallest freestanding structure in the world and tallest building in the USA. However, it won’t be holding onto it’s famous name anymore. Willis Group Holdings, an London based insurance broker, has leased more than 140,
000 square feet of it and bought the rights to rename it ‘Willis Tower’. The tower was immortalized in the 1986 teen coming-of-age comedy film Ferris Buellar’s Day Off, when the main characters stand on it’s glass viewing platform and gaze in awe at the city below them. With it being such a tourist attraction and a Chicago icon, I can’t see the local adapting the name change very easily. It will probably be known as the Sears Tower for a long time to come.
